What Is a Good Internet Speed for Your Home in 2026?
By Alex Rivera
The internet speed you need depends entirely on how your household uses the web. For light use — checking email, browsing social media, and streaming music — 25Mbps is sufficient for one or two people. However, the modern household with 4K streaming, video calls, online gaming, and smart home devices needs considerably more. We recommend at least 100Mbps for a family of three to four people.
For remote workers who regularly join video calls or transfer large files, 200–500Mbps provides a comfortable buffer. Gamers should look for plans with low latency and at least 100Mbps download speeds. If you frequently stream 4K content on multiple TVs simultaneously, aim for 500Mbps or higher. Fiber connections are ideal for heavy users since they offer symmetrical upload and download speeds.
The FCC defines broadband as at least 100Mbps download and 20Mbps upload as of 2025, which is a good baseline target. Use our speed test tool to check your current speeds, and if you're consistently getting less than 80% of what you're paying for, contact your provider for troubleshooting.
