Internet Safety Tips: Protect Your Home Network in 2026

By Sarah Mitchell

Your home internet connection is the gateway to your digital life, and securing it should be a top priority. Start with your WiFi network — change the default admin credentials on your router, enable WPA3 encryption if available, and use a strong, unique password. Many modern routers, like Xfinity's xFi Gateway, include built-in security features that automatically block threats and alert you to suspicious activity.

Beyond your router, use strong passwords for all your devices and accounts, enable two-factor authentication wherever possible, and keep your devices updated. Consider using a VPN for an extra layer of privacy, especially on public WiFi networks. Most major providers now offer optional security suites — Spectrum's Security Suite and AT&T's ActiveArmor provide firewall protection, identity monitoring, and parental controls.

For families with children, parental controls are essential. Most providers offer free parental control apps that allow you to filter content, set time limits, and pause internet access. Talk to your family about phishing scams, suspicious links, and sharing personal information online. The safest network is one where everyone understands the basics of cybersecurity.
